Athanasius was one of the most important Fathers of the early church. He has much to teach the modern church on issues ranging from how we approach God to how we live a courageous spiritual life. Dr. Carl Trueman (left) will be the main speaker. He is the Professor of Historical Theology and Church history at Westminster Theological Seminary (Philadelphia). Dr. Trueman is also a contributing writer at Reformation21.

He will be joined by Dr. Tedd Tripp (right), pastor of Grace Fellowship Church in Hazleton, PA and author of the best-selling Shepherding a Child’s Heart and Instructing a Child’s Heart

Pastors William Boekestein and Mike Conroy will also be speaking.

8:45 – 9:00        Welcome/Song

9:00 – 9:30        Session 1: (Boekestein) Avoiding Chronological Snobbery: The Bible on History. Why should I be interested in history? The short answer: The Bible says so. When God tells us to, “Remember His marvelous works which He has done” (Psalm 105:5) He’s calling us all to become theological historians. As we listen to his call we will experience the benefits of learning from the old paths (Jeremiah 6:16).

9:30 – 10:15       Session 2: (Trueman) A Professional Rebel: the Life and Times of Athanasius. Throughout the ages, many men and women have put their lives on the line for the truth of Christianity.  Among these, Athanasius, a Christian leader from the fourth century, holds a special place of honor.  The question he faced was, “What kind of a Christ can save?” His insistence on a biblical answer to that question placed him in constant danger from his enemies in a life worthy of a Hollywood movie.

10:15 – 10:30     Coffee Break

10:30 – 11:15     Session 3: (Trueman) The Art of Christian Biography: Athanasius and the Story of Anthony. What does a genuine Christian look like? Most, if not all, Christians probably answer this by reading books about great Christians from the past. The practice of writing such books is as old as the Bible itself; but, throughout the centuries, Christian writers have sought to inspire, educate, warn and entertain through recording the escapades of significant Christian leaders.  Athanasius was no exception; and in his “Life of Anthony” he set a standard, both in its strengths and weaknesses, for future generations.

11:15  - 12:00    Session 4: (Trueman) Once and future Faith: The Importance of the Ancient Creeds Today. Do we reinvent Christianity every Sunday?  What does it mean to say that scripture is our sole authority?  How do we connect with the testimony of the Christian church in times past?  The answers to all these questions require us to think about the great creeds of the ancient church which can be an unusually rich resource for Christians today.

12:15 – 1:30       Lunch (At Local Restaurants)

1:30 – 2:15        Song/Session 5: (Conroy) Finding our Lord and our Language: Athanasius on the Psalms. Why is Jesus called by so many conflicting names or titles? Some call Him “Lord,” others “homeboy,” or as the popular song by the Doobie Brothers says, “Jesus is just alright with me.” Could it be that because we don’t grasp the glory, majesty, and weight there is in Jesus’ Name that we don’t invest thought into the words we use in reference to Him? Athanasuis has help for us in a time when prevailing philosophies teach us that language is irrelevant.

2:15 - 3:00        Session 6: (Tripp) A Courageous Ministry: Doing Right in a World Gone Wrong. Despite repeated exiles and being in the eye of the theological storms over the canon, Christology, even the nature of God himself, and many lesser heresies and schisms, Athanasius sought to do the right thing. Even his final years were spend repairing the damage done through violence, dissent and exile.  His example points us toward doing the right thing.
