Romans 13:14

Thanks for the chuckle!

(John was kicked out of Mexico in the 80's when he was with CRWRC because he was accused of working for the CIA. I'm glad he was deported to Belize so that we could eventually meet!)

Thank you sooo much! As an "evil teen" myself, I'm so happy that you've written this article! You've summed up my feelings exactly. As I always try to say "teenagers are just people too, I'm a human, you're a human...we aren't monsters." =] thanks again!

I agree with Michelle. I will not see a movie until I check it out on www.pluggedinonline.com
I remember an article in World Magazine years ago where the author made the point that there are things Christians watch on the screen regularly, but they would be repulsed if people in real life were doing the same things in their living rooms. Last year I saw the movie Fireproof. In that movie the husband obviously had a problem with viewing inappropriate things. I liked how my children could watch that movie with my husband and me, and because of the way the movie was done, we didn't have to hear the word "pornography" or see nudity.

It is getting to the point that I feel yucky even after reading a movie review in World Magazine. What is the point of reviewing trash that Christians would be wise to stay far away from? I just don't understand.

Michelle,
I like your rating system. I might add "E" for edifying so that those that are really worth seeing stand out.
In response to your last question, I think one of the reasons we go to movies is to not be left out of the cultural loop. A more positive reason (in my estimation) is to be inspired (as you also suggested) with thoughts and images that are outside of our ordinary life-experience.

Movies are such a part of the culture we just sort of blindly accept them. (Yes, I used that adverb on purpose. Though sight is required for the activity, somehow we don't see.) Nudity has more or less become "part of the bargain".

Over the years my tolerance for film has gone from R, to PG-13 to PG to sometimes a G, if I can stand it. I personal prefer the rating O (offensive), S (scary) and D (dumb). Of course, there is always the universal WB (why bother?).

One might think I despise the cinema but, alas, not. Though I rarely go anymore (we haven't even mentioned the cost!), I think film is a wonderful art medium and cinematography can be glorious. God has made me to be a visually-oriented individual. There's nothing like a sweeping landscape with a swell of symphony music on the big screen. Sometimes just an opening scene like that will bring me to tears and I haven't even seen the movie yet.

In thinking about the cultural phenomenon of film, I frequently wonder, "Why do we, as Christians, go to the movies at all?" Seriously, what is our motivation for participating in this societal ritual?

Comment on Prepare to Die: Deriding All Our Deeds by Phil Urie

Certainly we deride "the old man" - what we were before Christ came to us. Paul called it all 'rubbish'. But shall we also deride the good works Christ's Spirit has wrought in us? May it never be! Humility is always the rule, but derision? I think not. Justified ones joyfully read in the Scripture what they are to be doing and expect the reward of grace. Giving a cup of water in Christ's name drives us to further generosities, knowing we are growing into His image. We deride ourselves when we sin, but never as we accomplish rewardable deeds for Jesus. Much of the time we are happy about being a Christian, and the works we do are part of our assurance. Our acceptance is not of works, but our approval is. Our goal is to "find out what pleases the Lord" and to not deride ourselves anymore. By faith and with wonder and thanks, we understand we will be rewarded for our very acts of obedience.

We "cannot end up like them" because Christ is speaking of unbelievers, not believers. This passage is illustrative of Hebrews 6:4-7, that is, of lawless ones "who partook of the Holy Spirit, and tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come". See also Acts 8:9-24. But the saints are "lawful ones" who glory in Christ and in the works Christ gives us to perform from the foundation of the world, though with imperfections. The verdict of Christ's sinlessness was rendered upon our persons when we first believed. On Judgment Day our imperfect works will be rewarded.
